Noise-reducing windows

Sound-insulating windows are windows with enhanced acoustic insulation. Every closed window reduces sound transmission to some extent, while specialist glazing and an airtight structure can improve protection. These windows help reduce noise from streets and the surrounding area. We assess effectiveness using whole-window performance, taking installation and ventilation into account.

Application

What level of acoustic insulation should you choose?

The required sound insulation depends on outdoor noise levels, the position of the windows and how the rooms are used. A bedroom facing a busy road may need greater acoustic protection than a living room overlooking a quiet garden. We take these conditions into account when preparing our proposal.

Sound frequencies also matter. Two noise sources with similar volume levels may require different glazing properties. For projects with specific acoustic requirements, the specification should be based on measurements or a specialist assessment.

01

Acoustic glazing

The glazing unit's construction plays an important role in sound reduction. Options include panes of different thicknesses and laminated glass with a special acoustic interlayer. We compare properties using the performance values of the specific glazing unit.

02

Airtight construction

Continuous seals, correct sash compression and carefully finished connections reduce sound transmission through gaps. That is why we check the acoustic insulation of the complete window.

03

Installation and ventilation

The joint between the frame and wall requires appropriate sealing. If the window includes a ventilator, we also include its acoustic performance in the specification to combine fresh air supply with noise protection.

Before choosing

Which values should you look at?

Rw — acoustic insulation
A value expressed in decibels used to compare the sound insulation of tested assemblies. A higher value means better reduction of sound transmission under test conditions.
C and Ctr — sound characteristics
Correction terms that adjust Rw for particular noise characteristics. For urban road traffic, Rw + Ctr is relevant because it better accounts for low-frequency sounds.
Whole-window performance
A glazing test result is not automatically the result for the whole window. When comparing quotations, we check whether the stated value applies to the glass alone or the complete assembly, and which fittings it includes.

Questions before buying

Acoustic windows — what should you know?

Does triple glazing always provide better noise protection?

No. Acoustic insulation depends on the glazing unit’s construction: pane thicknesses, spacing and the use of acoustic interlayers. Compare the declared performance of specific solutions; the number of panes alone does not determine effectiveness.

Will noise-reducing windows eliminate all noise?

Windows with enhanced acoustic insulation reduce sound transmission but do not provide complete silence. Noise can also enter through walls, the roof and ventilation systems. The result indoors depends on the entire building element and the quality of manufacture and installation.

Can acoustic protection be combined with good thermal insulation?

Yes. A suitable design can combine acoustic glazing with thermal insulation. Our quotation specifies both performance values for the proposed window, along with the agreed features and installation.
